I was saying to Tobias yesterday that I didn't object to Mirren's character as much as you do here; when I rewatched TLGF a few months ago I was really struck by her character's chops and how she was a fully rounded person (and there wasn't a hint of sexual violence at any point, which is pretty unusual when molls are 'allowed' to be intelligent and dignified). And to be fair, anyone would have been terrified at the end...

Yes, on a rewatch I fear I’ve been a bit harsh. But there was something about the scene where she breaks down and cries with Harold in their apartment which for me felt a bit by-numbers, and there isn’t much of her after that. By the standards of the time and the genre it is a properly fleshed out role which HM had to battle with the director to develop into what it eventually became.
