Thank you for this! I could not put my finger on what Sorkin got wrong about his young women, but you have nailed it. And also Dickens, whose sexual projections would keep a therapist busy for ever (and whose writing remains sublime).

Thank you! His attitude towards women is hard to pin down - like Dickens he’s unusually capable (for a man) of writing fully rounded women characters. He just occasionally goes mad when they’re young and good-looking.

I’ve absolutely loved this series and this is a fantastic final essay to tie it all together. I’ve not watched any of the three films mentioned here, and was barely aware of them if I’m honest, but will definitely look them out. I also feel like I need to revisit The News Room because I think I rather enjoyed it. (I realise I am not covering myself in glory here, being also a staunch supporter of Studio 60!) Anyway, thank you for these essays. You’ve certainly made me think more critically about Sorkin as a writer. Looking forward to reading about Sherlock Holmes!

I really appreciate your generous readings Lou, and I’m sorry we have repeatedly dissed your favourites! Definitely recommend Molly’s Game and Chicago 7. Being the Ricardos is fine, but a bit lower stakes unless you really care about Lucille Ball.
