Yes! Like a particle in the ground state, sitting still, doing nothing. Cannot fall any lower. But every now and then it jumps to an excited state, for a very short but remarkable moment, before falling back into the thankful oblivion of the ground state.
Tobias, do you research any of this, or do you actually have all these flick facts in your head? Either way, your love of film is self-evident, and you write so entertainingly about it all.
Thank you! I do, of course, do a little research, I have to admit, not least to check that I’m not just repeating someone else’s thoughts on something. Anyway, thank goodness for the modern trope of the ‘oral history’ of making something. I do miss the old DVD commentaries, they made such stuff so much easier ;)
Yes, like the real way back to albums with liner notes. I appreciate that without the commentaries you still produce such fine reviews. They’re like love letters.
Well, one of the upsides of the Metropolitan resolutions not to do 'snark' is that you're almost always writing about something you like or admire (or both) - although sometimes finding something original to say about something universally admired can be a little challenging
It’s another film I’ve yet to watch! I am a particular fan of the film with minimal plot where nothing happens though (drives my daughter to distraction) so it sounds like a winner to me. I am defiantly in love with the 90s despite its failings. I think I enjoyed being a teenager and a young adult far more than any of my children have so far. I like to think that is societal rather than just evidence of my poor parenting skills.
Something out of nothing. Creative nihilism. Vacuum fluctuations. Slacker.
Are you suggesting that Gen X are some kind of cultural quantum froth?

You manage it well!
'Change? I got change.'
Another excellent and insightful piece.
Thankyou! I had really been looking forward to rewatching Slacker and, happily, I was justified. Still great.
