I wonder if the one of the attractions of the Tudor period to modern storytellers is the advances in portraiture of the time. Painting suddenly becomes dramatically realistic from 1500 onwards, and the subjects suddenly look like people rather than illustrations.

I think I remember Mantel saying that it is WHEN the record is incomplete that the novelist can really get to work.

She definitely succeeded in making me feel sympathetic towards Cromwell. She did not so succeed with Danton and Robespierre – those rotters were beyond even her skill to sanitise, or maybe I just lack the imagination.

Finally, I think More technically is a saint, whatever one thinks about saints.
