I watched Night on Earth with my son some years ago (then aged about 16 or so). He's definitely not part of the "Young people of a particular type will always love the films of Jim Jarmusch", but I take the point. Just haven't come across any yet. @Toby: You should watch "Only Lovers" yet another Jarmusch Vampire movie (in an Interview he claimed that all his movies are Vampire movies, which makes sense, to me at least).

Hey Pete! Yeah - I was going to watch "Only lovers" for this year's Halloween articles and then I thought two Jarmusch things in a row might be a bit much, but it's definitely on my list (along with his Zombie film). And I agree, all his movies are vampire movies. They all take place at night, too, even when they don't.

I would not advice watching his Zombie thing ("The dead don't die" or something like that). It's in fact the only Jim Jarmusch movie I wouldn't recommend to anyone. I guess it had to happen at some point. It's Adam Driver's repetitive line in the movie, applied to Jarmusch himself "It's going to end badly". Anyway, too blunt, surprising lack of the subtlety and "in between lines" that makes his other movies so great. Btw, took my younger son (about 13 at the time) to the cinema to watch it, not a great success either.

Yeah - I'm not sure I've watched a Jarmusch film since 'Broken Flowers' - although I've never been sure whether it's me who's changed or him (I know it's both, really) but I just don't feel the draw anymore. Mind you, Ro's kids have recently discovered the Coen Brothers, so maybe I ought to try some earlier Jarmusch on them too...

haha, that's great. My kids both (from a very young age) were absolute Coen fans. For quite some time the Dude was kind of part of our household (although he seems to have been pushed away by Shaun of the dead or Lock, Stock.... more recently). Seems to appeal a lot more to youngsters than Jarmusch. It's obvious why, but I still disagree. Surely there must be a way of making them appreciate the depth of Jarmusch. Or is it only another 80s thing?

Very nice point about JJ’s gentle treatment of his idiots. Must watch Down by Law again.

I was thinking much the same thing. And it’s also made me realise that there are a bunch of jarmusch films I’ve never actually seen
