I came late to Moonlighting. I turned 14 in 1989 and I think I only watched the final series. I know this is felt to be of a lesser quality than the earlier series but I have to say, I loved it. I really appreciated its wackiness. I don’t feel like I’d ever been exposed to anything quite like it before. I’ve never managed to go back and watch any of the shows I missed. I really should try to.
It was definitely a lot better than I was afraid it would turn out to be and, as you say, wonderfully and casually weird in its approach to the medium. I genuinely can’t think of anything else quite like it.
I loved Moonlighting as a young teen, and thought Maddie and David were both very cool, Maddie always elegant, whipsmart and grounded, David a rough diamond geezer, the loveable rogue many teen boys admire (or try to be). Reading this, I remembered all that - thank you - and I'm wondering if I *should* do some rewatching, there's so many 80s things that no longer cut the mustard and are of their time and only of their time. Perhaps random episodes? I would probably appreciate the meta-ness more than back then.
I loved it at the time too and for much the same reasons. I am ashamed to admit I even bought Bruce Willis’ album of R&B covers. I was surprised at how well it held up, I must say, and a lot of that was down to its meta approach to the medium. If you’re in the UK, its on the STV Player and they even have a little listing of recommended episodes that’s pretty comprehensive.
I had to look up “oneiric”, but otherwise, YES! Moonlighting! I have loved Bruce Willis’s acting ever since
Sorry about that - you never quite outgrow an English Literature degree ;)

I loved Moonlighting as a young teen. Time for a rewatch if I can find it all!
I watched it on the STV Player (in the UK), of all things. They also do rather a good job of highlighting the best episodes.
