The Waitresses! Greatest Christmas record ever made! Yes! Also “I Know What Boys Like” is very good and very playlistable. I have a very soft spot for The Pretenders, 2000 Miles. I will defend Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime to the death, because there’s a time for irony and Christmas ain’t it. Yet I also love Bob Dylan’s Christmas in the Heart, and can’t decide if he’s being ironic, or I am, or both, or neither; it matters not, because the love is real.
You have my sword in defending 'Wonderful Christmastime', and I'm with you on the Pretenders too. Which means I now have to check out that Bob Dylan track: thank you very much!
Oh my gosh, I'm late to the party and catching up on my newsletters folder, and I'm so sorry about the car wreck! Thank goodness you were all okay. Oof!
And thanks for reminding me about Derry Girls. That part where they get banned from the chip shop though! 😂
Well I, I’m afraid, am a terrible hypocrite, since I don’t watch them but will quite happily watch the equivalent from the ‘40s / 50s like ‘Christmas in Connecticut’ or ‘A Holiday Affair’ or ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ come to that. It’s probably just snobbery but it is also that a childhood with these things constantly on the BBC over December has meant that I can’t help but think of Christmas as being somewhat mid-century (as well as Victorian, of course).
So sorry to hear about your accident but relieved you both came out of it unscathed. We used to travel that bit of road a lot as kids on trips from Devon to Medway to see family and nearly witnessed a head on collision once when a guy overtook us, I think, assuming he was still on the dual carriageway. Fortunately, he avoided the lorry in his path and ended up uninjured in a ditch.
Really enjoyed this month’s round up. Derry Girls is fantastic! It’s been a family favourite here for a while and the episodes stand up to a lot of rewatches. I’ve added Say Nothing and Watergate to my list. Thanks for the recs.
Very excited by your Christmas playlist! The tree is going up this weekend so it’s perfect timing. Only disappointed that I can’t just play it on a loop on Spotify!

What's your stance on Hallmark-esque Christmas movies...? 👀

I'm going to blame the accident for rattling by brains around although really it's just being old that's the problem.
And yes, I suspect we're going to be avoiding the A303 for a bit
